The Stainless Steel 904L material is a super austenitic alloy steel, which is used for moderate to high corrosion resistance applications. They can be used in a wide range of process environments. The Stainless Steel 904L Flanges possess stronger magnetic properties compared to the 316L and 317L stainless steel grades. It shows good resistive properties in acidic environments, and also against crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. They are also known to resist pitting in chloride solution.

The first considerable difference between SA182 F904L Weld Neck Flange and ASTM A182 F904L Slip on Flange are in their structure. One can easily recognize the weld neck flange by its hub that tapers to the piping system from the bolted connection. On the other hand, the slip on flange is connected to the piping system through double welding, done on the inside and the outside of the flange. The welding seam form of weld neck flange is girth weld whereas in case of slip on flange, it is a fillet weld. They have different nominal pressures too, the weld neck flange has a higher nominal pressure range compared to the slip on flange. And thus, weld neck flanges are used for high pressure applications whereas the slip on flanges are used in low pressure services where there is a lesser risk of leakage.

Hot Working: After uniform heating to 2000-2200 F, hot work should begin. Do not work the material at temperatures lower than 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. To achieve optimal ductility and corrosion resistance, all hot work should be followed by full annealing.
Cold Working: Despite the higher forces required, 904L will respond similarly to other austenitic stainless steels such as 304, 316, or 317. The majority of typical operations can be completed successfully.
