What Is Carbon Steel Flanges?
The carbon steel flanges are made up of carbon steel and their pressure ratings range between class 150 to 2500. The content of carbon in these flanges can go up to 2.1% by weight. There are elements too, present in the alloy and the variation in their quantities determine the properties of the flanges. For example, if the carbon content in the flanges increases, then after the heat treatment, it becomes stronger and harder. On the other hand, it also makes the flanges less ductile. However, increasing the carbon content without the heat treatment would reduce the weldability of the material.
The carbon steel flanges mostly consist of mild steel or low carbon steel. The inclusion of a small percentage of carbon enhances the strength and toughness of the flanges, but they are not readily tempered. This helps in reducing the overall cost of the material and as a result, these flanges are used in a wide range of applications.
These flanges are widely used for ambient and high temperature services in environments that involve high pressure. One of the best things about this material is that it is durable and available at low cost. Also, due to its high strength and toughness, these flanges are hard to break.
Manufacturers of carbon steel flanges can offer customization, in terms of, dimensions and coatings on the flanges. Depending on the environment where the flanges will be used, there are several types of coatings available like anti-rust painting, oil varnished, electric zinc coated and alloy material coated. Also, there are different types of carbon steel flanges available and each have their individual usage:
Carbon Steel Slip On Flanges Vs Carbon Steel Weld Neck Flange
Being made of the same material, the Carbon Steel Slip On Flanges and the Carbon Steel Weld Neck Flange might possess similar chemical properties. But, due to the dissimilarity in their structure, they perform different operations in pipelines. They are mainly used in industries like chemical, nuclear power, petrochemicals, construction, shipbuilding industries, power plants, etc.
The Carbon Steel Slip On Flanges are mostly suitable for low pressure applications. They are easy to install and can be welded to different pipelines without much hassle. The welding process helps to reduce the cost of manufacturing the flanges. They do not require much longitudinal space to get mounted on for application.
Carbon Steel Weld Neck Flanges are used in applications that involve severe and critical conditions. The environments where these flanges are used mostly have high pressure and widely fluctuating temperatures and pressure. These are used for volatile and hazardous fluids, where the temperature is in the sub-zero range.
Forged Carbon Steel Flanges Vs Carbon Steel Lap Joint Flange
The Forged Carbon Steel Flanges come with higher precision and are capable of giving better performances. These are widely used across several industries, mainly for connecting equipment and pipelines. They can work in environments that involve high temperatures and pressures. The Forged Carbon Steel Flanges is a device that looks like a plate. They are usually circular in shape and hence can be attached to the ends of the pipes easily. They can also be attached to valves and other components for facilitating and assembling and disassembling of the entire piping system. They possess some of the best mechanical features which makes the whole connecting process better.
The Carbon Steel Lap Joint Flange is primarily used in places where frequent dismantling of the piping system is needed. These are mostly used in places where there is a space constraint. It consists of two components, a stab end with a lap-joint ring flange placed over it. These are mostly used in similar sizes and pressure classes like that of the weld neck flange.
Functions Of The Carbon Steel Threaded Flange
Carbon steel is a perfect mixture of various carbon components and iron. The higher the carbon content, the higher will be the strength and toughness of the flanges given it is heat treated properly. But the increased carbon reduces the ductility of the product, and it gets hard to weld too. Higher carbon reduces the melting point and also the temperature tolerance of the flange. The threaded flanges do have welding characteristics, but they are very simple and come with fast assembly. They should not be used in places where there is a large temperature difference. Also known as the screwed-on flange, these are especially used in places where welding cannot be done. Thus, one can mostly find the threaded flanges in low pressure applications that have smaller pipes.
Advantages Of Carbon Steel Socket Weld Flange
The Carbon Steel Socket Weld Flange comes with several advantages: it is resistant to corrosion, durable, safe and economical. The Carbon Steel Socket Weld Flange is used in place of the threaded flanges so as to reduce the risks of leakages. Also, this particular type of flange needs not be bevel for weld preparation. It is also to be noted that the weld material cannot penetrate through the bore of the pipe and also, the construction cost for the socket weld flanges are much less compared to the butt weld joint. It is because no special skills or equipment is required to execute this.
The carbon steel socket weld flanges can be customized by the manufacturers according to the requirements specified by the clients. They are great in leakage reductions and they are available in a high durable standard.
