What is Copper Nickel Pipe Fittings?
The Copper Nickel Fittings mainly consists of copper with 25% nickel, along with other materials like 0.05-0.4% manganese. The copper nickel alloy is mainly used for making coins, medals, and several other semi valuable products. The chemical composition of the alloy gives it some unique features which are quite useful for several industrial usages. The key features of the Copper Nickel Fittings would include:
Due to all these wonderful features offered by the Copper Nickel Fittings, they are used for a wide range of applications across several industries. Due to their excellent performance in seawater, they are widely used in offshore projects, special marine vessels, etc. Along with these, they also have a high demand in several other industries such as desalination plants, chemical processing, oil refineries, power plants, and condensers.
What is Copper Nickel 90/10 Fittings used for?
The chemical composition of Copper Nickel 90/10 Fittings makes it ideal for all-around seawater applications. It has a good demand in the shipbuilding and offshore industries. Being resistant to seawater corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in saltwater, the Copper Nickel fittings has a good demand in special marine vessels too. Apart from these, the fittings are also used in piping, condensers and heat exchangers in seawater environments. They are a popular choice to be used in marine hardware. One can also find the Copper Nickel 90/10 Fittings in propellers, propeller shafts, and in the hulls of the high-quality boats.
The addition of iron and manganese in the copper nickel alloy helps them to maintain their high resistance to corrosion. Thus, this fitting has a wide range of applications across different verticals, starting from consumer products, to different industries like desalination plants, chemical processing, oil refineries, power plants, etc., and they are mostly known for their applications in the marine environment.
Is Cupro nickel pipe fittings better than copper fittings?
The addition of nickel and other materials like iron and manganese to the copper nickel fittings enhances its properties. One can find 70/30 copper nickel that consists of 70% copper and 30% nickel, along with trace amounts of iron and manganese. The 90/10 copper nickel alloy is also available that has 90% copper and 10% nickel. The addition of other elements like iron and manganese to copper and nickel helps in enhancing its properties like the strength and corrosion resistance. They also possess good tensile strength and have excellent thermal conductivity. The additional material also increases the inherent resistance to microfouling properties and enhances the ductility of the fittings too. The alloy also has better castability, weldability and hardening properties when compared to the copper fittings. Thus, it can be said that the overall performance of the copper nickel fittings is much better than the copper fittings, especially in marine environments. That is why, one can find the increased usage of the copper nickel fittings in the shipbuilding and offshore industries.
Copper Nickel Socket Weld Fittings Vs Copper Nickel Threaded Pipe Fittings
The copper nickel fittings are popular grades for several marine, industrial, and architectural applications. Being made of the same alloy the Copper Nickel Socket Weld Fittings and the Copper Nickel Threaded Pipe Fittings are used in similar applications. But their welding process is different and due to that, their characteristics might vary a bit. Socket weldings are done by inserting the pipe into the valve’s recessed area. The same goes for fittings and flanges. They are mainly used for the smaller pipe sizes whose diameters can go upto NPS 2 maximum. The threaded pipe fittings are the ones in which the pipes are connected internally or externally by threads. These can go upto the maximum size of 4 inches. They are the most traditional connections that we continue to use at the present times. They too are used for the smaller pipe sizes whose diameters are NPS 2 and smaller.
The Copper Nickel Socket Weld Fittings are mostly used in an environment of low to medium pressure, and they are mostly suitable for confined spaces. The socket weld fittings are widely used in various industrial applications. They offer a good flow and thus are mostly used in places where the pipeline tends to be permanent. On the other hand, the Copper Nickel Threaded Pipe Fittings are mostly used in non-critical low-cost applications. This would include domestic water pipes, industrial water cooling systems, and fire protections.
The threaded fittings are easy to install compared to the socket weld fittings. Also, lesser force is required for the joining process in case of threaded fittings.
Cupro Nickel 90/10 Long Radius Elbow Vs Copper Nickel 90/10 Short Radius Elbow
The Cupro Nickel 90/10 Long Radius Elbow and the Copper Nickel 90/10 Short Radius Elbow are made of the same alloy, cupro nickel and thus they have similar properties. Also, being an elbow type of fittings, they perform similar functions. The elbow is one of the most common types of fittings used in the piping systems. They offer a flexibility to the pipe to change its direction of flow. The elbows are mostly available in two angles which are 45 degrees and 90 degrees. However, the angle can also be customized by the supplier according to the requirements of the client. The elbows are classified as short radius and long radius. Thus, their difference lies in the curvature and the length of the fittings. The long radius elbow will not be able to give the pipe as sharp a turn as the short radius elbow. The long radius elbow has a radius 1.5 times the outer diameter. The large radius ones are mostly used for reducing the resistance or elbow wear. However, when there is a space or position limit in the installation area, then the short radius elbows are preferred.
