What is socket weld flange?
The socket weld flanges are used on pipes that are smaller in size, but with high pressure. The flanges have a socket through which the pipe is inserted and then a fillet weld is applied to it, around the top. This helps in getting a smoother bore, which in turn, gives a better fluid or gas flow in the run pipe.
The socket weld flanges come with different types of faces, like flat face, raised face, or Ring Type Joint facing. Their dimensions can be customized according to the specific requirements. The socket weld flanges are available in different material grades, including carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, etc. One of the things to remember about this type of flange is that they are not considered to be a high-integrity joint. This is because the weld is quite tough to prove. This is why the socket weld flanges are most likely to be found in low to medium classes, with ASME less than or equal to 600. Due to their low integrity and unsustainability to be used at higher pressures, the socket weld flanges mostly have a raised for flat face. It is to be noted that the mechanical strength of the socket weld flanges is quite similar to that of the slip-on flanges, even though the latter uses double welds.
The ASME B31.3 standard states that there should be a gap of at least 1.5mm between the pipe and socket, which would allow for thermal expansion taking place during the welding procedure. This reduces the chance of the weld cracks.
How do you install a stainless steel socket weld flange?
In order to install a stainless steel socket weld flange, the pipe needs to be inserted through the socket until it reaches the bottom of the shoulder area. Then a fillet welding is done to join the connection. The primary goal here is to create an expansion gap that should be between the pipe and the flange.
Do carbon steel socket weld flange have a schedule?
The carbon steel socket weld flanges are available in the pressure classes from #150 and goes up higher. They have a schedule from 40 to 160. The pipe schedule specification ensures that the socket weld flange’s ID matches with the pipe’s ID.
What are Socket Weld Pipe Flanges Face Types
There are different Socket Weld Pipe Flanges Face Types, like:
Advantages and Disadvantages of Flat Face Socket Weld Flange
The Flat Face Socket Weld Flanges have the gasket in full contact with the whole surface of the flange mating area. It basically helps to avoid any bending moments put on the flange at the time of torquing the bolts. They are primarily used in less critical applications, like in the low pressure and low temperature environments.
It is however, important to remember that flat face flanges will not be able to provide a secure connection like that of the raised face flanges, and hence they should only be used in less critical situations.

RF Type: A little part of the RF socket weld flange protrudes from the face and surrounds the flange bore. In this raised location, a gasket seat will be installed.
RTJ Type: There is an RTJ style groove on the raised face surface where you can add a gasket ring to improve sealing performance.
Insert the pipe end into the socket weld flange until the pipe bottom touches the shoulder area, then pull the inserted pipe back 1.6mm (1/16") and fillet weld. The goal is to produce an expanding gap between the flange and the pipes or fittings (1 fillet weld).
