What is Stainless Steel Socket Weld Fittings?
The stainless steel socket weld fittings comes from the high-pressure fittings family, which are mostly used for several industrial processes. These fittings are highly leakage-proof and that is why they are widely used in the lines that convey flammable or toxic material. These fittings are also used in the lines that transfer expensive materials. Thus, it can be said that the stainless steel socket weld fittings are highly reliable as they are used for steam ranging between 300 and 600 PSI. They can only be used in the ASME pipe conjunction, which means that they are available in similar sizes. These fittings are highly resistant to corrosion and they are very durable too. This means that the ss socket weld fittings can last for several years with minimal maintenance and repairs. These fittings can ideally be used in high-pressure environments too.
There are different types of stainless steel socket weld fittings available in the market, like:

  • Stainless steel socket weld elbow- They are used for changing the flow direction in different degrees.

Difference between Socket Weld Fittings and Threaded Fittings
There are two main types of forged fittings, namely socket weld fittings wherein the pipes are connected to them by fillet welds, and threaded fittings wherein it is screwed together with the pipe.
The socket weld fittings are mostly used for industrial processes that involve low to medium pressure. These fittings are found in confined spaces and are applied on permanent pipeworks. They help in maintaining a good flow inside the pipe.
The threaded fittings are mostly used for non-critical applications like domestic waterline, industrial water cooling system, etc. They are suitable in low-pressure environments only.

When would you use Stainless Steel Socket Weld Fittings?
The stainless steel socket weld fittings are extensively used for a diverse range of industrial processes. This includes:

  • Various types of fittings including the reducers, elbows, and tees are used in the pipelines that transfer flammable, toxic, or expensive material.
  • They can only be used in the ASME pipe conjunction and hence its size changes according to the diameter.
  • They are mostly used in places where the pipelines are installed for permanent usage. They are designed to offer a good flow of materials.

Socket Weld Fittings Types and Applications
The Socket Weld Fittings Types and Applications would include:

  • Full coupling- It helps to join one pipe to another, or a pipe to a nipple, etc.
  • Half-coupling- These are basically welded directly to the run pipe and thus helps create branching connections.
  • Reducing coupling- It helps in joining two pipes that have separate outside diameters.
  • Reducer insert- They help create economical combinations quickly of the pipeline reductions that are to be made using the standard socket weld fittings.
  • Union- It consists of three interconnected pieces and has a screw joined design. There are two internal threads along with a centerpiece which helps in drawing both the ends together when the rotation takes place. It is important for the unions to be screwed tightly before welding the ends to minimize seat warping.
  • 90 degrees elbow- Like the normal elbow fitting, this one too changes the direction of the flow, but to a specific angle of 90 degrees.
  • 45 degrees elbow- Like the 90 degrees elbow, the 45 degrees elbow changes the run direction of the pipe to 45 degrees.
  • Tee- This is also a popular pipe fittings which helps to create a 90 degree branching from the pipe, hence changing the flow direction.
  • Cross- Slightly different in design when compared to the tee fitting, this one too creates a 90 degree branching from the pipe to change the direction of the flow.
  • Cap- This is used for sealing or stopping the flow of pipe and hence are inserted to the ends.

 

Difference Between Forged Fittings VS Wrought Fittings
There are several differences between the forged fittings and the wrought fittings. Some of them are listed below:

  • The forged fittings are a form of the wrought fittings. In other words, the forged fittings can be described as a subset of the wrought fittings.
  • The main point of difference between the wrought and the forged fittings lue in its strength. The forged steel starts as a casting, which then follows the forging procedure which makes the forged fitting stronger and more durable. The wrought fittings are used in low-pressure applications as they might be harder but are much more brittle when compared to the forged fittings.
  • Due to the process of casting and forging, the forged fittings tend to be more durable. They are mainly forged using large hydraulic hammers which put the molecules and atoms into an alignment as the hammer gets hitted.This makes them harder, and less brittle compared to the wrought one. The wrought fittings do not undergo this procedure. This is why one can easily notice that striking and high impact tools are often made of forged steel as they are capable of withstanding that pressure. Thus, the forged fittings can be used for higher-pressure applications than the wrought ones.

RF Type

RF Type: A little part of the RF socket weld flange protrudes from the face and surrounds the flange bore. In this raised location, a gasket seat will be installed.

RTJ Type

RTJ Type: There is an RTJ style groove on the raised face surface where you can add a gasket ring to improve sealing performance.

Insert the pipe end into the socket weld flange until the pipe bottom touches the shoulder area, then pull the inserted pipe back 1.6mm (1/16") and fillet weld. The goal is to produce an expanding gap between the flange and the pipes or fittings (1 fillet weld).
