What is Ring joint flange?
The Ring Type Joint Flange can be defined as a machined metallic ring that has cuts and grooves on its face. The grooves basically rests on the metallic ring, and it gets compressed when the connecting bolts present on the flanges get tightened. It offers a close-fitting seal and offers leak proof piping connections. They are ideal for high temperature and high pressure services , and available in different material grades.
The RTJ flange can be a good alternative to the raised face flange for certain applications. They are ideally used for critical applications because they have a good structural integrity. They offer close-fitting seals and thus can effectively reduce the risk of leakage during the flange assembly operations.
When To Use Ring Type Joint Flanges
The ring type joint flanges are primarily used in critical situations, like high temperature and high pressure services. They offer a tight seal and help to prevent leakage in the piping system.
Ring Type Joint Flange Design Considerations
The RTJ flange is a metallic ring that has been machined and they come with deep cuts and grooves on the face. The grooves basically rest on the metal ring, and they might get compressed when the bolts present in the flange get tightened. Due to this unique design of the RTJ flange which helps in giving a close fitting seal, they offer leak-proof connection.
Difference between raised face and ring joint flange
The raised face flanges can be used with a wide range of gaskets. Due to their structure, i.e, a raised face, they are much more accessible. The design of the raised face flange is such that it can concentrate the hole pressure in that one small gasket area, and promotes better separation between the two flanges that are being joined.
The ring type joint flanges offers metal to metal seal, which is much stronger and hence they can effectively withstand higher temperatures and pressures. They come very handy in places where there is a space constraint. But like the raised face flange, they do not support different types of gasket. But as you choose the right one, they will offer a more reliable and stronger connection.
How to do inspection of Rtj Type Flange?
Apart from visual inspections, ultrasonic testing can also be done on the RTJ flanges to understand their conditions.
