What is Dished End?
The Dished End can be defined as an end cap which is welded to the pressure vessel’s body. They are manufactured using a wide range of production methods that depend on the type of Dished End that is needed. The type will also help in understanding the specific characteristics of the end product. The cap in this case, looks like a flat disc, and it is made of different material grades that is suitable for the required applications. The most common material used for making Dished End would include carbon steel and stainless steel. However, depending on specific requirements, exclusive materials like aluminum can also be used.
The Dished Ends are primarily used in high pressure vessels and boilers. They are available in different shapes and sizes, and their dimensions can be customized according to the specific requirements. Just like the end caps, they are also used for closing the piping connection. The installation procedure of the Dished End can be through threaded, socket welding or butt welding joints. Depending on the type of material used, the Dished End can be used in different types of environment. For example, the alloy steel dished ends possess hardness, ductility, and they are capable of resisting corrosion. That is why they can be used in various corrosive environments. For more sensitive or expensive applications, material grades with better mechanical properties can be used.
Stainless Steel Torispherical Head Dished End Vs Grade 516Gr70 Dish End
The Stainless steel Torispherical Head Dished End is the most abundantly used heads that come with more radial sections for pressure distribution. They are capable of withstanding high pressures but that is lower than the ellipsoidal head dished end. They can be used in corrosive, high temperature environments, without much maintenance.
The Grade 516 Gr70 Dished Ends are end caps welded on the body of the pressure vessels. It is made of medium carbon alloy material and has improved toughness. This material grade is primarily used for welded pressure vessels.
How Carbon Steel Dish Ends are made?
The Carbon Steel Dish Ends are made by dishing the plates with the right crowning radius. The dished head is completed with the help of a flanging machine by forming the edge. The process is done by CNC if there is a requirement for a series production. The dishing process involves cutting the plate into circular shape of the given size, and then forming the dish under a press. Multiple hits are distributed throughout the surface that helps in crowning the plate.
Hemipherical Heads Dished End Vs Ellipsoidal Heads Dished End
The Hemispherical Heads Dished End is popularly chosen for applications in a pressure vessel, because they have that ideal shape. It helps in dividing the pressure in the vessel across the head of the surface. It is also known as the hemispherical tank head, and commonly used in gas or liquid storage tanks.
The Ellipsoidal Heads Dished End is also known as an elliptical head dished end, and it has a very economical shape. This is because the height of this head is a fraction of the diameter. It’s radius can vary between the two axes, major and minor, usually in 2:1 ratio. The Ellipsoidal Heads Dished End is very versatile and commonly used as a cover plate or for the bottom of the vessel. It offers better pressure resistance.

Technical Explanations
Diameter Tolerance | -1mm~1mm |
Outside Perimeter Tolerance | -3mm~3mm |
Spinning is often done on a head with a reasonably wide diameter (internal diameter greater than 700 mm) and a thin wall thickness. Stamping is done with a punch that fits the shape of the inner wall of the head. The size of the punching machine limits the size and shape of the forming head. Due to the high cost of the punching die, only the standard head is normally manufactured, and the press head is further classified as hot press and cold press.
