What Is Split Tee?
A Split Tee is a T-shaped pipe fitting whose inner diameter is the same as that of the outer diameter of the pipe which is to be hot tapered. It is primarily used at the time of hot tapping into a pipeline. This variant of the tee fitting is used when the branched connection is greater than or equal to half the run direction diameter. The run direction is the flow direction inside the pipe, which will be cut. For the design of the Split Tee to be in compliance, it is very important that hot tap and piping standards are followed.
The benefits of getting a Split Tee are:

  • It will help to tie into a line while it is in service.
  • It can be used with activities related to hot tapping and line stop installations.
  • If the process is done properly, the weld will not penetrate the tapping area. However, proper precautions are needed to be taken as welding burn can lead to line failure.
  • They can easily be customized according to requirements and are readily available.

However, if the pipe is cement lined or internally coated, then slip tee cannot be used with that. The heat will flake off the coating and destroy all the protection that has been given by the coating.

How Do You Weld A Reducing Split Tee?
Split tees with reducing branches would need to meet the requirements for the fittings with a hot tap machine. In case the Reducing Split Tee has buttweld ends, that should be beveled as per the ASME B16.5 standard. The Reducing Split Tee are manufactured using various techniques like reduced branch opening, hot drawing, branch outlet welded to snug-fitting sleeves. The welding procedures done during the manufacturing process should be in accordance with ASME Section-IX. Charpy impact test and hardness test should be included in the procedure of welding qualification test of the Reducing Split Tee.
