  • Type A stub ends are machined to fit with lap joint flanges. They are the most commonly used stub ends.
  • Type B stub ends are used with the standard slip-on flanges.
  • The Type C stub ends are used in conjecture with both lap joint flange and slip-on flanges. They are the least popular among the three.

Carbon Steel Short Stub End Vs Carbon Steel Long Stub End
Carbon Steel Short Stub End is also known as MSS-A stub end which is an industry norm. They are used in conjunction with a flat face lap joint flange. The dimensions of the Carbon Steel Short Stub End must meet the dimensions of the pipe to which it will be welded and they must also have the same material grade and schedule.
The Carbon Steel Long Stub Ends are the ASA-A stub ends and they are longer in length. They are less popular compared to the MSS-A stub ends. Apart from the length, there are no considerable differences between the two flanges.

Stub end are offered in three different ways, type A, B and C.

Type A

For standard joint flanges, the Type A Stub End is used. The stub end lap thickness is greater than or equal to the nominal thickness of the pipe wall. The lap joint flange will also be applied to the sort A's outer corner radius.

Type B

The Type B Stub End is used as a lap flange for standard slip on flanges. The lap thickness on these short ends is greater than or equal to the pipe wall's nominal thickness. Furthermore, the outer corner radius of type B is small enough to accept the slip o flange that will be used as a backup flange.

Type C

The Type C Stub End will be used for standard lap joint flanges and will be installed on the flange. It's flaring with a rounded edge at the lap's inner diameter. If necessary, the radius will be created as close to a square as possible. The lap thickness is one-seventh of the pipe wall thickness. The sort C is sufficiently short to accommodate any backup flange.

The "loose" Flange concept of a Lap Joint is extremely useful during piping system field installation. If two spools are to be mated in the field, having one Flange that can be rotated is very useful for aligning the bolt holes prior to the introduction of the Stub bolt and the associated nuts. If positive isolation is a process requirement, the facility of easier orientation and alignment of bolt holes is especially useful if there is a spool that must be removed frequently.
